This page introduces ministries and organizations, which are currently active in the parish. Those who give their time and talent show forth the life and vitality of the parish. It does not take much reflection to know that all voluntary activity needs constantly to be supported and renewed.

St. Monica’s Church need your help and support; the church needs new workers. What follows is a full list and description of some ministries and organizations that you may join:

            Ministry of Acolyte

Men and women of the parish are urged to serve, that is to assist at the

celebration of Mass on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

From the earliest days of the church there were those from the congregation who would assist at mass, that is deacons, lectors and acolytes. Acolytes serve at the altar; they prepare the altar and sacred vessels. An acolyte may also be cross bearer or incense at Sunday Mass.

Serving at the Eucharistic table and at various liturgical celebrations you draw directly from the wells of salvation, the strength that is necessary to live well.

            Ministry of Lector

A lector is minister of God’s word. In fact the documents of Vatican II tell us that Christ is truly present to us when the Word is proclaimed in the Eucharist. A “reader” is not merely a person who reads at Mass. A reader helps God to be present to others in the proclamation of the Word. The reader is asked to proclaim the word of God so that it might be received in prayerful appreciation of God’s word.

Readers are needed for Sunday masses, for Holy Days, for Weekdays and for Funerals.

            Eucharistic Ministers

Because we believe we may receive Holy Communion under both species that is bread and wine, lay people have been given the faculty of being Special Ministers of the Eucharist.

These women and men assist the priest at Mass and also bring communion to shut-ins. They are an invaluable aid in the ministry of the parish.

Eucharistic Ministers are needed for Weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays Masses.

The Music Ministry at St. Monica’s

The music ministry of the Church of St. Monica features cantor Joseph Neal, associate cantor Debbi Burdett, and the St. Monica Choir under the direction of David Schaefer.

Music is provided at four masses each weekend: Saturdays at 5:30 pm, Sundays at 9:00 am, 10:30 am, and at noon, featuring the choir.

We view the participation of the music ministry as a reflection of beauty and spirituality, encouraging congregational participation in worship and singing. We promote performance of traditional and contemporary music, reflecting the liturgical needs of a diverse urban parish.

We have formed and maintained our choir (currently 26 members), encouraging companionship between members singing together, fostering a spirit of co-operation, mutual respect, and affection, reflecting the values expressed in the gospels. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings at 7:30, Saturday afternoons at 3:00 (optional), and we sing at the noon mass each Sunday, as well as festival masses, when we are joined by the St. Monica Chamber Ensemble.
